Irritations

08.18.2007 by Tim Reed

Here’s an incomplete list of what irritates me in life:

People who use checks at the grocery store.
Slow service at a restaurant.
People who try to check out more than 10 items in the 10 items or less line.
Anything involving the DMV.
Dealing with Verizon CSRs.
Dealing with Charter Cable CSRs.

In Philippians Paul writes, “but in humility consider others better than yourselves”.

If, when confronted with people and situations that really get under our skin, we really did consider others better than ourselves, how would we react?

not how I normally react. I’m cool with being nice until I’m irritated! it’s something I struggle with daily.

It reminds me of when you were teaching tonight talking about leaving a big tip when you have crappy service and I kept saying “Yeah, but what if you have HORRIBLE service?” Something I’ll be pondering the next couple days.

It is a tough one to wrap your mind around. My initial reaction is to demand my rights. But if Jesus had demanded his, I’d be out of luck.

The one that always gets me is that pushy lady behind me in the Redbox line. She stands way too close and snaps her gum to try to make you choose a movie faster. I guess I’m just used to the privacy people give you in the ATM line, but those kinds of people are too pushy for me.

I guess I should just deal with the minor intrusion and not let it ruin my attitude for the rest of the day.

If I were a better man:

In as many such situations as possible I would actually talk to the person. If they are annoying me, actually being nice to them might just change how I’m feeling. If I am for some reason annoying them (could it be that Amy would have made Tim’s list because she is the slow person that the rest of us have to wait on?) then I have a chance to show kindness to them through my words and possibly change how they are feeling.

Amy has annoyed me for longer than you could ever know Christian.

    ;)

What’s wrong with using checks at the grocery store! I do that!
